Background
The Master of Science in Mathematics
degree
program can serve many needs. It is intended to provide a sound
foundation
for further graduate study at the doctoral level and to provide
additional
education for teachers at the secondary school level or beyond. It can
also serve those who have or who are looking for careers in industry,
research
and commerce (including insurance and financial planning).
Most applicants for the M.S. Mathematics program have undergraduate degrees in mathematics, computer science or the sciences.
Admission
To be admitted, applicants must complete
the application folder, submit official transcripts of all courses
taken
at other colleges and universities, forward official Graduate
Record Exam (GRE) scores and provide three letters of
recommendation.
Students whose first language is other than English must
satisfactorily
complete the Test of English as a
Foreign
Language (TOEFL).
Applicants must provide evidence of an undergraduate background in mathematics. This should include at least 12 credit hours of Calculus, three credit hours of Linear Algebra (comparable in content to Salem State College undergraduate course MAT 304A), and three credit hours of Modern Algebra (at the level of Salem State College undergraduate course MAT 303A).
Admission is possible in all semesters but Fall admission is preferable.
Course
of study
Each student is encouraged to develop
a personalized plan of study, with the help of the mathematics graduate
faculty.
The program of study involves 30 credit hours. Courses are divided into Level I and Level II, of which Level II courses are more advanced. Full details of program requirements and course descriptions are found in the Graduate School Catalog. A list of the courses can be found below.
Convenience
The program is designed to be especially
convenient for students wanting to pursue a graduate degree in
Mathematics
on a part-time basis. Each course is generally offered one evening a
week
in the Fall and Spring semesters (from 4:30-6:50 p.m. or from 7:00-9:20
p.m.) or two evenings a week in the six-week periods of Summer I
(May-June)
or Summer II (July-August) from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.
The
Faculty
All M.S.
Mathematics degree program faculty hold doctoral degrees from
research
universities. Their interests and expertise range broadly over pure and
applied mathematics. The faculty have written articles that have been
published and presented in scholarly settings.
