Prerequisites: BIO 105, CHE 124 & 125 or equivalents.  Not offered to BIO majors!

Required Textbooks:

  1. Lecture:  Talaro: Foundations in Microbiology, 5th Ed., 2005 McGraw-Hill.
  2. Laboratory:  Johnson and Case: Laboratory Experiments in Microbiology, 7th Ed., 2004 Pearson/Benjamin Cummings Publishing.

 

Grading Criteria: (Lecture is 60% of the grade)

          Lecture Exams: 50%

          Lecture Final: 10%

          Laboratory (separate syllabus to be handed out in lab) 40%

Lecture Goals and Learning Objectives:

v      To become familiar with historical milestones of microbiology, and be familiar with tools and methods of microbiology.         

v      To become familiar with the habitats, growth requirements, and cellular structure/function of microorganisms.

v      To understand methods of microbial growth control in a laboratory and clinical setting.

v      To appreciate the ubiquity of microorganisms and their positive and negative role in human health.

v      To become familiar with a variety of human diseases caused by microorganisms.

v      To understand the human/microbe interaction, and general aspects of how the body fights microbial infection.

 

Attendance is in lecture is expected, but not mandatory.  Lecture and exam coverage may change, but the exam dates usually will not.  The student is responsible for knowledge of any missed lectures or schedule changes.  Any schedule changes will be posted to the web site as soon as practicable.
