Content Modules for World History II

Home

In order to effectively organize the content, it was divided or “chunked” into six relatively equal “learning modules” throughout the semester that focused on key historical issues for a specific chronological era. These learning modules would be in digital form and delivered to the students (inside and outside of class) via the college's WebCT Vista® course management system.

Within each learning module, content was delivered to students utilizing laptop and Internet technologies. All original course content traditionally given as lectures was re-designed and produced into Web-based streaming lectures using Adobe Captivate® . Various “e-activities” were developed for fostering students' use of laptops for critical thinking, research, analysis and presentation. Assignments were developed to assess students' ability to learn content, collaborate, research, write and use information technology to solve the historical problem or engage the relevant issues. While the specific characteristics of each learning module varied appropriate to the content, they were designed to follow a relatively uniform format so that students could anticipate and effectively prepare for and complete each learning module during the semester. The uniform format for each learning module consisted of:

1. Module Overview-Faculty created summary of the main historical and thematic points of the module.
2. Web-based streaming lectures using Adobe Captivate®.
3. Readings-Publisher produced e-text chapters, monographs or novels, online articles and primary source documents, and faculty-evaluated Web sites.
4. In-class collaborative e-activity with students in assigned groups including Web-based research, collaboration and group presentation using laptops and wireless technology.
5. Group discussion online utilizing WebCT discussion board features.
6. Online module exams on content and themes. (Total of 3 exams assessing 2 modules each)
