The NEIGC banquet on Saturday night will also be held at the Ramada.
Surficial geologic mapping in New England is pressing forward with experienced hands, new players, and plans to start mapping programs. Scientific questions remain unanswered and practical applications of surficial and 3D mapping are crying out for state of the art map products. With this letter, we propose a gathering of interested parties to present the status of the developing science and mapping methods and to further the cause of Pleistocene/Holocene geology in New England.
The Vermont Geological Survey (VGS), U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), University of Vermont (UVM), and the New England Intercollegiate Geological Conference (NEIGC) are co-sponsoring a symposium entitled "Surficial Geologic Mapping in New England" at the upcoming NEIGC meeting in October 1999 in Burlington, Vermont. Currently, we are looking for speakers for the symposium and would like to invite you to give a presentation. The symposium will be held during the peak of fall foliage on Thursday September 30, 1999 from 9:00 a.m to 4:00 p.m. in Burlington. The one-day symposium will be followed by standard NEIGC field trips on Friday through Sunday, October 1-3, 1999. Specific surficial geology field trips will be linked to the symposium and will highlight Vermont surficial geologic mapping including the results of recent VGS mapping efforts. We hope that those attending the symposium will be able to make the field trips.
The symposium will be organized into two sessions:
We would like to emphasize surficial processes in general in the first two sessions during the morning, and contributors should not feel restricted to New England studies. In the fourth session, we encourage contributors to discuss current surficial mapping programs and recent State surficial geologic maps.
We ask that contributors submit a title and a brief description (preferably by email) by March 15, 1999 to Larry Becker or Greg Walsh. Presentation format will be 15 to 20 minutes before a seated audience. We will conclude the symposium with an informal poster session, and if you would prefer a poster format, please let us know. We ask that presenters prepare a one page abstract with references that will be published as part of the NEIGC guidebook. The abstract deadline is July 1, 1999. Students are of course encouraged to attend to capture interest in surficial geology and bring benefits from a day of presentations before going in the field. We are encouraging anyone who has mapped or has research interests in Vermont to submit a field trip abstract through the normal NEIGC channels (see website below).
We look forward to hearing from you and hope that you can contribute to the symposium. Please contact Greg or Larry for more information.
