Meet at 8:00 AM in the parking lot of the Caroga Lake Post Office in Caroga Lake, NY. Caroga Lake is on Rts 29A-10 north of the twin-cities of Gloversville and Johnstown. The best way to get there from the south (Albany) or west (Syracuse) is to take the NY Thruway to Canajoharie and get on Rt 10 north. Stay on this (~20 miles) until you reach Caroga Lake and the Post Office. From the east, take Rt 29 west from Saratoga. In Gloversville get on Rt 29A north and stay on it until you reach the Post Office. From the north, get on Rt 10 south from Piseco Lake and head for the Post Office. There are basically no local motels, so you are advised to seek accommodations in Gloversville-Johnstown on Thursday night. You might be able to rent a cabin at the nearby Canada Lake Store (518-835-8561) or the Pinnacle Restaurant and Motel (518-835-4121). There is a State campground at Caroga Lake.
Bring lunch, wear boots, and realize that there are essentially no restroom
facilities along our route.
A-2, Leader: Roden-Tice
AND
Trips A-5, Leader: Franzi
Mary Roden-Tice (A-2) and David Franzi (A-5) shall meet their participants at the Bootleggers Pub in the Comfort Inn, Plattsburgh on Thursday night for an informal mixer. Mary, Jim Dawson, and Franzi can deliver any registration material or guidebooks at that time. On Friday morning these three groups shall leave the Comfort Inn parking lot at 8:00 AM.
In FranziÕs guidebook road log, the trip is said to leave the Geology Dept. parking lot, but it is far more convenient to meet at the Comfort Inn. The participants should bring all the necessary field gear and lunch. The trip involves only moderate walking (nothing too strenuous).
Participants on FranziÕs trip (A-5) should contact him prior to the trip. He would like a headcount as far in advance as possible so that he can make arrangements for vans at Altona Flat Rock. A large caravan of cars will not go well there. He can also suggest accommodations.
The trip will begin at 8:00 AM on Friday, September 27th, 2002 in the parking lot at the west end of Hudson Hall on the SUNY Plattsburgh campus. To reach the Hudson Hall parking lot from Exit 37 (the Plattsburgh - Cornelia street/Route 3 Exit) of I-87, 'the Adirondack Northway', head east on Cornelia Street/Route 3, past a congested series of traffic lights and pass under the Northway bridge. Approximately 0.5 miles east of the bridge under the Northway, at a traffic light, make a slow right on to Broad Street (Plattsburgh Plaza is to your left/north and the WIRY radio station is set back on your right/south at this intersection). Continue east on Broad Street past the traffic light at Prospect Avenue and past the traffic light at Draper Avenue. Turn left/north into the parking lot on the north side of Broad Street, just east of Draper Avenue, and west of Hudson Hall. If you miss the parking lot you will go under a concrete pedestrian bridge over Broad Street. Participants should bring their lunch, including a drink, and dress for the weather. Boots, or suitable walking shoes, will be essential since some stops require short hikes on uneven terrain.
