Committee on Computers in
Mathematics Education
August 4, 2000, 1:00 p.m.
Minutes
Present:
CCIME Members: Platt, Deeba,
Bessman, Ensley
CCIME
Friends: DeLaVina, Penn, Klotz, Porter, Hill
Call to
Order: 1:00 p.m.
The first item
of discussion centered about where to put the distribution list for the
committee. She agreed to put the
distribution list in the signature at the bottom of the email messages.
1. The current
MathFest program contained two CCIME sponsored contributed paper sessions:
(a) Bessman and Platt's session on Innovative
Use of Technology in Teaching Mathematics reported audiences of 25 - 30 at
the various talks. If more than 50
percent of the speakers at a session need special equipment, the MAA will
provide it.
(b) Penn and Hill's session on Technology
Based Modeling in Mathematics Courses reported an average of 50 per
talk. There is a possibility of an MAA
notes volume from this session, perhaps after a second session next summer.
Appropriate
equipment for future contributed paper sessions is probably an overhead
projector and recommend that presenters bring their own laptop.
2. The program for January 2001 in New
Orleans consists of the following contributed paper sessions, but the CCIME
endorsement was missing in the original write-ups:
(a) Computer Algebra Systems in
Upper Division Mathematics Courses ( Andrew Land and Kent Neuerburg)
(b) Innovative Uses of the World
Wide Web (Brian Smith and Marcelle Bessman)
Also on the
program is a Panel Discussion, organized by Earl Fife and Larry Husch on On-Line
Testing and a Minicourse entitled The Global Classroom, presented by
Marcelle Bessman and Douglas Quinney from Keele University in England.
No formal
proposal was ever submitted on Enhancing Learning Through Computer Generated
Visualization so that was eliminated.
3. Possibilities
were discussed for MathFest 2001 in Wisconsin. The following were approved by the committee:
(a)CTUM
has proposed a CPS with the title Faculty Development: Use of Technology in
Teaching Undergraduate Mathematics (organized by Bonnie Gold and someone
else still to be determined). CCIME would be willing to cosponsor if CTUM
should decide to switch to a panel discussion.
(b)
A second session on Technology Based Modeling in Mathematics
Courses organized by Penn and Hill was approved.
(c)
A contributed paper session on Creative Uses of Technology in Teaching
Mathematics organized by Platt and Bessman was
approved.
(d) A special session on The
Interactive Text, organized by Deeba and
White, possibly
in conjunction with Project Welcome was discussed as a
Special Session.
4. Ideas were
presented for the Joint Meeting in San Diego in 2001.
(a) An NSF submission by the MAA
called MathDL (Digital Library) was discussed by Jerry Porter. This was submitted by Peter Land and David
Smith. It would consist of LOMA
(Library of Mathematics and its Applications), Commercial Products, and JOMA
(Journal of Online Mathematics and its Applications). If this is funded, a presentation may be appropriate and also maybe
a demonstration at the MAA booth. Also,
referees would be needed for the journal.
CCIME endorsed and agreed to assist as requested by the MathDL.
(b) Computational Mathematics in
Linear Algebra and Differential Equations as a contributed paper session
organized by Deeba and someone else still to be determined will be considered
at the New Orleans meeting.
(c) A report on The Global
Classroom might be another possibility.
5. MAA Lecture
Notes #9 was the original notes series on technology. Perhaps Deeba and Platt could speak with Don Albers and David
Smith about a new notes series.
6. The MAA has
submitted a proposal to NSF on the resumption of undergraduate faculty
development workshops. If it is funded,
they will need proposals for distance learning courses or workshops. John Scott, Bill Hoefer, Nancy
Baxter-Hastings and Tom Rischel are the co-authors on the proposal.
