MINUTES

I. Call to Order: 3:09 p.m.

II. Attendance
CCIME Members (present): Mary L. Platt, Bruce Yoshiwara
CCIME Members (not present): Marcia Birken, Elias Deeba, Douglas Ensley, Johnny Henderson, Zsuzsanna Kadas, Gina Reed, Brian Smith, Bert Waits, Jeffrey Watt
CCIME Friends: Marcelle Bessman, Carl Cowen, Rebecca Hill, Howard Penn, Harriet Pollatsek, Martha Siegel

III. Minutes of the last meeting were approved unanimously.

IV. Activities at the current meeting

a. CPS: Creative Use of Technology in Teaching Mathematics

Mary L. Platt, Salem State College
Marcelle Bessman, Jacksonville University

The first session had very good attendance. Some of the talks were excellent, some were not. After extensive discussion, the Committee recommends that papers presented using computers should be scheduled for either 15 or 20 minutes with a five minute break between presentations.

b. Technology Based Modeling in Mathematics Courses

Rebecca E. Hill, Rochester Institute of Technology
Howard Lewis Penn, U.S. Naval Academy

The number of submissions for this session was marginal. The organizers do not recommend continuation of this CPS.

c. Special Session: Invited Paper Session on the Status of Interactive Mathematics Texts

Elias Deeba, University of Houston-Downtown
Dan Kalman, American University
James White, Director, Project WELCOME

This session occurs after the committee meeting.

V. Activities planned for the Joint Meetings 2002, San Diego, CA

a. Accepted for presentation CPS: Title: Computational Mathematics in Linear Algebra and Differential Equations

Elias Deeba (University of Houston-Downtown, Houston, Texas)
Rich Marchand (SUNY, Fredonia, New York)
Tim McDevitt ( Millersville University, Pennsylvania)

b. Accepted for presentation CPS: Innovative Uses of the World Wide Web in Teaching Mathematics (Bessman and others) - continuation of the successful series

c. Minicourse: Repeat of the Global Classroom (Bessman).

There appears to be a miscommunication with the Minicourse Committee. If there is no resolution, it was suggested that Marcelle resubmit for the Joint Meetings (Baltimore) 2003.

VI. Discussion and Approval of proposals for MathFest 2002, Burlington, VT

a. CPS: Creative Use of Technology in Teaching Mathematics

Mary L. Platt, Salem State College
Marcelle Bessman, Jacksonville University

This session will focus on innovative uses of technology to support and enhance the learning of mathematics in all college courses. In particular, we are interested in the use of technology to support conceptual understanding and appreciation of the application of mathematical principles to solving real world problems. The paper session is sponsored by the MAA Committee on Computers in Mathematics Education (CCIME).

b. Title of Session: e-Learning models in Mathematics

Elias Deeba
Ananda Gunawardena

Description: This session invites papers that explore courses/models that utilize e-learning tools in teaching mathematics. Papers that deal with methods of implementation, assessment and maintenance of existing tools; issues pertaining to design of effective tools for particular courses (using, for example, a CAS approach, an intelligent tutor approach or a web-based approach); e-tools that emphasize interactivity; and successful examples from other disciplines are encouraged.

The committee was confused by the discrepancy with the above description and the cover letter which spoke of e-Learning Courses. From the parentheses until the end, the description is rather close that that of the Creative Uses of Technology CPS. It was not clear if the intention was to focus on courses whose content is delivered totally via computer. The proposers were asked to revise the description and resubmit for consideration for endorsement of the committee via an email.

VII. Preliminary discussion of proposals for Joint Meetings 2003, Baltimore, MD
a. Perhaps Marcelle's Minicourse on the Global Classroom
b. Perhaps a CPS on computer based assessment.
The MAA has just created a Committee on Articulation and Placement, Bernie Madison (visiting the MAA) as chair. M. Platt will contact Bernie to investigate the possibility of a joint effort. Another possible contact is Mary K. Abbey at Montgomery College, Takoma Park, MD.

VIII. Math DL/JOMA
The Math DL Advisory Board is meeting at the same time as CCIME.
No discussion.

IX. New "Notes" volume (Deeba)
No discussion.

X. SIGMAA
Marcelle contacted Kirby Baker (or perhaps, vice versa). Kirby reports that a SIGMA is in the process of being started. The organization meeting will be held at the Joint Meetings 2002 (San Diego).

XI. Other
a. Martha Siegel give the committee an overview of the differences between an MAA Committee and a SIGMA. In essence, committees make policy through the governance structure while SIGMAs are special interest groups with no policy making capabilities.

b. ICTCM - collaboration with this group might be appropriate for CCIME. They did an activity before this meeting and we did activities during the meeting. There was an indication that ICTCM might be interested in doing workshop in conjunction with activities of the MAA sections. Marcelle will speak with Don Albers about these issues and report back to the committee.

c. CUPM - Harriet outlined some of the thoughts of CUPM in its process of working on the Curriculum Guide. Topics for our thought include
i. Technology as a skill vs. technology as an end
ii. How does the availability of technology change the way and content of what we teach?
iii. CUPM is avoiding the "math wars"
CCIME has been asked to make comments. Mary will compose an appropriate memo, in consultation with Harriet, to focus the comments. CUPM would like to have comments no later than September 15, 2001.

d. Odds and ends that were discussed
i. Statements coming from the MAA can be used by Departments for supporting documentation for their proposals to administrators.
ii. Replacement of technology equipment should be a regularly scheduled budget item.
iii. Incentive should be included towards a technology enriched environment when tenure/promotion decisions are being made.

XII. Adjourn - 4:44 p.m.
