My name is Robert Blanchard
and I live in the Town of Manchester-by-the-Sea in a house that my wife and I
built together 25 years ago. I have strong roots in this area, having been
born, raised, and educated all within a twenty mile radius of where I now live.
Even so, my work has taken me far. The amount of travel that I have done, and
the number of different places where I have worked and visited clients over the
years, is extensive. This travel has
given me a view of the differences and effects our local experiences have on our
approach to work and lifestyle. I like to say that I have a solid base of
operations here in New England with largely variable commuting distances. One
interesting thing about this is that I don’t ever remember eliminating any
career opportunity from consideration because of . . .
where . . . only the . . .
what. As to the . . . what - my work has taken me to five continents and so many different countries that I sometimes feel that I have been in the travel business. In fact, I have spent most of my career in the wonderful world of Microwave Electronics, (not ovens - but stuff like radar, communications and electronic countermeasures). My jobs over the years have been in Technical Sales and Marketing Management, Manufacturing Management, as well as the General Manager for several different development and manufacturing operations in England, and Ireland as well as in this country (both stateside and in Puerto Rico). I have done this kind of thing for a number of different companies such as Varian, M/A-COM, AMP, and recently with TYCO Electronics. Beginning about ten years ago I became more heavily involved in Program Management rather than the more traditional line and staff roles that I had in the past. This has taken me to lots of new and different areas and also some new industries. I most recently managed some of the Enterprise IT projects at The Gillette Company. My first classroom teaching experience was an undergraduate marketing course here at Salem State. That first course made me realize how much I enjoyed teaching. It also showed to me how beneficial applying my business experiences could make the learning process for the students in my class rather than with the-one way lectures on theory that I got in some of my college classes. Because I could relate the text to actual business experiences, I found that my class was more engaged and willing to offer their own experiences. That can make the learning process fun and exciting for both you and me. I think if we are willing to share our experiences with each other, then we all will be able to collaboratively enhance our learning process. I did my BS at Northeastern University in Boston. My MBA is from Suffolk University also in Boston. I have also done lots of technical and project management courses over the years so that I was sure to keep up to date. My two daughters and their combined five children live here in Massachusetts – close enough so that a grandfather can drop by to spoil them – but not so close that we get babysitting calls. My wife and I live with our four cats that came from my wife’s family farm in Nova Scotia. I enjoy music and continue to struggle trying to learn to play the piano. I also have a passion for recreational cooking, and have done a number of classes at the places like the Culinary Institute of America and Johnson and Wales University. So let’s get going in cooking up some great learning together!
